70% of Chinese mills fall foul of new environmental protection law

Mar 13,2015

Seventy per cent of steel mills in China fall short of the country’s new environmental laws, which came into force at the beginning of 2015.

Billed as the ‘strictest environmental law in Chinese history’ the new legislation, which came into force in January, will require China’s steel mills to invest around 200 yuan into environmental protection per tonne of steel produced.

According to the China Iron and Steel Industry (CISA) while the steel industry is viewed as a major polluter, it’s not the chief offender. CISA claims that the industry reduced sulphur dioxide discharge by 16.63% in 2014. Overall waste gas emissions, however, increased by 1.93% from 2013.
